It's Been Golden

Exposure 2010 comes to a close today and I have to say I wish it could keep going on for another month.

From the brilliant photography from Japan showcased at Triangle Gallery, the stunning new work of Bill Anderson at Banff's Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies, poignant black & white portraits by Erin Wallace at Canmore's Avens Gallery to the awe inspiring presentation by Larry Towell - Canada's leading photojournalist. This is photographic art at its very best.

A special thanks goes out to the festival's sponsors: VISTEK, Calgary Arts Development and Gowlings. Also sponsor Lowepro for providing seven camera bags which were given out as prizes at select special events during the Festival.

Without the support of the sponsors, galleries, media and the broader photographic community Exposure would not be possible.

A special thank-you also goes out to the Board of Exposure 2010 with Craig Richards as the Chairman working tirelessly to make the Festival the success it is.

Webber at the Whyte

If you haven't had an opportunity to hear George Webber speak about his work before then head to the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies tonight at 7 p.m.

Webber's career spans three decades and throughout he's been able to go the very essence of his subject matter be it the people of the Blood Reserve or men in Calgary whose struggles have led to the streets.

Webber says that his favourite place in the world is Southern Alberta and for that I'm glad.

Final Push For The Figs

There's a great exhibition of photography at West Canadian Digital Imaging located in the neighbourhood of Inglewood but it ends on Feb. 28th.

The Figs say:

As We See It offers extraordinary insight into the joy and possibilities of communities in the developing world as captured through the eyes of children and adults in Africa.

From a whimsical shot of a chameleon scurrying across the road, to the revealing portrait of a proud young widow using a sewing machine to earn an independent living, As We See It offers an insider’s view of how development can and does make a difference in communities’ lives.

The exhibitoion also gives Calgarians an opportunity to experience how simple contributions can make tangible differences in people’s lives.

As We See It was made possible through a year-long camera initiative developed by Calgary-based Fig Tree Foundation and undertaken by three of the international aid organizations the foundation supports.

Through the generous support of West Canadian Digital Imaging and Vistek, Fig Tree Foundation collected used digital cameras donated by Calgarians and distributed them to True Vision Ghana, Healthy Child Uganda and Canadian Humanitarian, in Ethiopia.
The organizations used the cameras to build creative and marketable skills within the communities they were working in, as well as to document the unique and effective development projects.

The Art of Photography and History

What a great past weekend of photography. Larry Towell's presentation on Friday evening in Canmore was an inspiration to anyone who cares about photography - or humanity. His images went from the gruelling streets of San Salvador to the front porch of his home in Ontario.

I had the opportunity to interview him the next day for Photo Life magazine and he told me that ultimately he thinks the most important aspect of his work is as a historical record. The Magnum archives recently moved from New York City to Texas and a hundred years from now people will go see Towell's photographs to understand the state of the world through his lens.

Another photographer concerned about history is Calgary-based artist/graphic designer Heather Saitz. She took part in a panel discussion on Saturday at Glenbow Museum as part of Exposure 2010.

She will be releasing a book in April about two historic Calgary apartment buildings. Those structures are now home to dozens of artists. Heather's book will help connect the past to present through photography and text.

If you care about publishing photography, self, or otherwise, you'll want to attend a panel discussion at Glenbow Museum on Saturday at 3 p.m. in the ConocoPhillips Theatre.

Moderated by Glenbow's Melanie Kjorlien the panellists will include respected large format photographer Lawrence Chrismas, ACAD instructor and new media artist Jordan Tate, the head of the University of Calgary Press - Donna Livingstone - and photographer/graphic designer Heather Saitz, who is set to release a photography book that she's published with the assistance of the online site Blurb.com.

The Wild West of Kent Monkman

There was an interesting article in Saturday's Calgary Herald by Nancy Tousley about the Kent Monkman exhibition at Glenbow Museum commenting on his take on the West.

Monkman's exhibition is part of Exposure 2010 with photographs of his alter ego Miss Chief included.

Tousley says about the photos, "A small side gallery contains a suite of five brilliant photographs, Miss Chief: The Emergence of a Legend (2006), made to look like old tintypes, that show her in evolutionary roles as a performer in Wild West shows, vaudeville and silent movies."

Black & White photographs by Erin Wallace of some citizens in Ukraine--now showing at The Avens Gallery in Canmore--or the spectacular new colour prints by Bill Anderson being showcased at the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies has positioned Exposure 2010 as a must attend experience.

From my point of view that's one of the best collections of photography ever mounted in Calgary.

Just spoke with Joshua Jensen-Nagle at Newzones. It's a real range of work and techniques.

He was explaining one of the photographs of Newfoundland was shot on large format film, then the large scale print is put into a custom built tank and dyed.

Newfoundland never looked better.

Joshua Jensen-Nagle Summits at Exposure 2010

Joshua Jensen-Nagle has been getting a lot of press these days for work that combines photographic process with dying, staining and other alternative techniques. The result: photographic prints that have a timeless and somewhat eerie quality.

Check out his landscape work, including pieces that interpret the mountains of Banff at Newzones Gallery. His solo show opens there on Jan. 30th.

There's a good story about Joshua Jensen-Nagle's photography. He's having a solo show at Calgary's Newzones Gallery as part of Exposure 2010.

The opening at Newzones happens on the evening of January 30.

Canadian photojournalist Robert Semeniuk will be in Calgary this February as part of Exposure 2010.

A self described activist Semeniuk is undoubtedly passionate about his work which has included projects on HIV/AIDS, the dispossessed children of Gaza and street kids in Vancouver.

On of his most recent projects has been documenting the devastating effects of trachoma, the world's leading cause of preventable blindness.

A documentary photographer and writer, Robert is also the founder of On The Ground, an organization dedicated to supporting and presenting documentary photography.

Economic Breakthrough

When Steven Friedman started out he was an economic consultant. That is until the day he went out hiking in the Gatineau hills and literally stumbled upon a waylaid camera and took his first photograph. That discovery prompted a photographic journey that is going strong.

Known for his photographic interpretations of the natural world, Friedman was a finalist for the 2009 Hasselblad Masters Awards.

His carefully printed works (on rag paper) will be exhibited in Canmore during Exposure 2010.

When a new gallery shows up in Calgary and photography is being exhibited you know I'm there.

Tomas Jonsson, curator of an upcoming exhibition contacted me the other day asking about getting involved with Exposure 2010. The result: another venue, and an exhibition of photography that will explore how we understand informally organized and contested places.

In February the work of Adrian Blackwell, Stefan Canham, Rufina Wu and Ossi Kajas will be shown.

Pith itself was until recently a bottle depot in the Calgary neighbourhood of Inglewood. Now it's an affordable space for "irreverence, experimentation, and practices that challenge our present conceptions of contemporary art."

Polaroids Process and More

There will be so many great photography exhibitions on display in February that I haven't even had time to mention the show at Illingworth Kerr Gallery at Alberta College of Art + Design.

Polaroids of models taken by Attila Richard Lukacs, these images help viewers get inside the creative process but also stand as works of art in their own right.

In the not-too-distant past Lukacs was referred to as the "bad boy" of the Canadian art world.

Not sure if that label still fits, but artist does.

From Rock to Ruins

Dean Turner has been involved in photography for three decades. A self-taught photographer his work has covered rock/punk performances to the ruins of Palenque in the Chiapas Mountains.

A student of history and military affairs, his photography is guided by a curiosity that often explores the darker side of human nature.

From the Backseat Looking Out

I have to admit I didn't know much about artist Stev'nn Hall, but his images do captivate me.

Perhaps it's the wanderlust they suggest. Photo-based works, they often start out with Stev'nn photographing the passing landscape from a vehicle.

He enlists his training and experience in photography, painting and filmmaking to create these pieces which will be shown in Canmore during Exposure 2010.

They are fleeting fragments of freedom contained, if only for a moment, in a frame.

Through The Lens and Beyond

Canmore native Erin Wallace is an example of a young woman who was introduced to the art of photography through mentorship.

She participated in the Through The Lens program supported by Banff's Whyte Museum. And later she interned with American documentary photographer Mary Ellen Mark and members of her staff in New York City.

Erin recently went to Ukraine to continue a personal photo project and the result is a series of strong images in keeping with a tradition of documentary photography.

You can see more of her work in Canmore this February as part of Exposure 2010.

Calgary Banff Canmore Photography Festival

Canmore is a growing presence in Exposure 2010. Not surprising when you check out some of the exhibitions that are planned for February.

One that caught my attention is a show that will be at the Canmore Museum & Geoscience Centre. It will highlight the life and photography of Daisy Carroll. Canmore's postmistress in the early 1900s, she was also a gifted amateur photographer.

Documenting local activities, Daisy's images include mining, ice hockey and farming.

An Artful Conversation Between Science and Photography

Calgary-based photographer Bill Peters is an interesting guy.

After studying astronomy at the University of Southern California he then pursued a graduate degree in History and Philosophy of Science and Technology from the University of Toronto.

Education aside what brought Peters to my attention is new photographs he's created that bring his keen observational skills to the topic of water.

During Exposure 2010, Peters will exhibit photographs that explore the merging of water and land.

The resulting images are both beautiful and provocative.

A Blockbuster at The Art Gallery of Calgary

During Exposure 2010 The Art Gallery of Calgary will be showing works from the the national portrait collection held by Library and Archives Canada.

One of the photographs in the collection is by V. Tony Hauser. Working with antique large format cameras, and using the platinum process to print, he has created a body of work depicting artists, dancers and indigenous people that is now a bona fide Canadian treasure.

Student Photography

Student photography has a strange ring to it. Like somehow it must be lesser than.

Of course you will be suddenly reminded that's not true when you check out a selection of images from the Whyte Museum's Through The Lens collection that will be exhibited at the Juniper Hotel during Exposure 2010 in February.

Taken by students from the Morley area, during the past 12 years, these photographs help document a learning process, but also stand as strong compositions in their own right.

Planning for February

I heard there was something called the Olympics coming up in February 2010.

I like winter sports, but instead of competing for seats in Vancouver, I'll be in Calgary, Banff and Canmore during February for Exposure 2010 checking out a roster of intriguing photography.

And don't forget that the Juniper Hotel in Banff will be hosting an artists and curators talk on the evening of Feb. 6th. Should be fun and informative.

Hey, who knows, maybe the next morning I'll even strap on a set of skis in tribute to winter.

Exposure Expansion

Exposure 2010 is called the Calgary Banff Photography Festival but don't forget about Canmore with an ever growing roster of venues set to participate.

Exposure is even heading to Balzac this year with a gallery at Cross Iron Mills exhibiting the photography of Alexandre Poustovoit. One of the images is titled Shall Our Paths Ever Cross.

The answer is: yes. At Exposure 2010.

Sumptuous Black & Whites

Think of the word sumptuous and the the black & white prints of Michael Levin might pop into your mind.

This Vancouver-based photographer keeps racking up awards and admirers. Winner of the 2006/2007 "Photographer of the Year" at the International Photography Awards in New York, Levin's silky photos will be exhibited at Calgary's Weiss Gallery in February,during, you guessed it, Exposure 2010.

Alternative Photography

You might be hearing a lot about alternative photography in the coming months.

It's a funny term because much of the work is created by using cameras and materials of the recent past.

Remember 35 mm film? How about Polaroid? What's a Brownie?

During Exposure 2010 Newzones in Calgary will be exhibiting an impressive cross section of photographs made with alternative materials.

One photographer who is gaining wide recognition is Joshua Jensen-Nagle. From New Jersey and a graduate of Ryerson University in Toronto his "low fidelity"images are a treat.

Arguably Canada's best known photojournalist, Larry Towell will be the keynote speaker during Exposure 2010 this February.

But before that Towell's work will be showcased in a gallery operated by the famed photo collective Magnum that opens November 20th.

It will be situated in the Saint Germain des Prés district of Paris and Towell's unwavering photojournalism will be key to the exhibition in this new venue.

Fig Tree Foundation at Exposure

The Fig Tree Foundation will be taking part in Exposure 2010.

The Calgary charity describes itself as being "committed to supporting collaborative projects and programs that demonstrate the best potential return on every dollar raised."

One of the initiatives the Figs were recently involved in was distributing cameras to project participants to learn a skill, create economic activity and photograph their world as they see it. The planned exhibition will showcase images taken by the participants as well as photos taken by Calgary-based development workers while at projects across the world.

The Art of Photography

On of my favourite aspects of Exposure is the willingness of its organizers to be open to all forms of photography.

From images made with pinhole cameras to the most recent digital wizardry, you're likely to find it at one of the participating venues under the umbrella of the Festival.

A category of photography that often gets a bad rap is adventure photography. But when I recently viewed a photograph Mark Gallup took of a skier caught up in an avalanche I was once again reminded of how powerful a statement can be made when a talented photographer and the forces of nature collide.

This work and many others will be included in a Whyte Museum exhibition titled Out There! during Exposure 2010 throughout February.

BIG News

Larry Towell, one of the world's most renowned photojournalists will be taking part in Exposure 2010.

A full member of Magnum Photos since 1993, Towell's empathy for the Earth's most vulnerable citizens is obvious within each frame.

A legendary photographer he has travelled the globe for more than 25-years to help all of us understand the plight of those who live in war zones, exist without a place to call home and yet still find the courage to carry on.

Sine the early 1900's the Harmon family has been involved in photographing the Canadian Rockies.

Carole Harmon carries on in her grandfather's (Byron Harmon) footsteps by interpreting the natural world with her own distinct photographic vision.

George Webber

Calgary-based photographer George Webber has brought much attention to groups that are often ignored. Rather than photographing his subjects as members of a fringe society, George pays homage to them.

The spirit of his work transcends the context in which they appear, be it: print, page, or screen.

An exhibition of his work will be shown during Exposure 2010 at Banff's Whtye Museum.

Reflection

It seems that as a society we're busier than ever.

Once in a while I try to unplug and take a moment to reflect. I was just thinking how thankful I am for my family and friends and the work I am able to contribute to.

Helping support the art of photography is a real privilege and today I'm going to consider all of the photographs that have brought more meaning to my life.

I was just out for a drive this morning and the sight of the Rockies was incredible.

It reminded me of John Folsom's work and how he takes inspiration from natural icons, such as the snowy peaks of Banff, and creates imagery that has a timeless quality.

I hear that The City of Calgary is going to be re-branded. The slogan of old is, "Heart of the New West."

I have to admit, it does seem a little flat.

Hey, I have an idea for a new slogan: Exposure City.

Calgary's Herringer Kiss Gallery is well known for exhibiting photography and this tradition will continue in February when they show the work of David Burdeny.

An artist with a growing international reputation he is primarily self-taught. Using a large format camera and long exposures the resulting photographs retain an otherworldly quality that are visually captivating.

Do yourself a favour and check out his stuff during Exposure 2010.

Bill Anderson calls himself "a pessimist looking for reasons to become an optimist."

His subject matter is the complicated world that exists somewhere between the natural and manufactured.

No matter how he describes himself he's a master of large format photography as you can see by the image posted on the front page of http://www.exposure2010.ca/

It's great to see how many galleries are behind Exposure this year.

I think it's a real testament to the work that has gone into the Festival during the past half decade.

Congratulations to all the Board members - past and present.
